Fully Homomorphic Encryption: A New Engine for Blockchain Privacy and Innovation
The Development and Application Prospects of Fully Homomorphic Encryption Technology
Cryptographic techniques have played an important role in the progress of human civilization, especially in the fields of information security and privacy protection. With the rapid development of the blockchain industry, cutting-edge cryptographic technologies such as zero-knowledge proofs, secure multi-party computation, and fully homomorphic encryption continue to emerge. Among them, fully homomorphic encryption ( FHE ), as the "holy grail" of cryptography, can perform arbitrary computations on encrypted data without decryption, bringing new possibilities to various fields.
FHE allows for unlimited computations and operations on ciphertext while maintaining the mathematical properties of the encrypted data. Currently, companies like Microsoft and Zama are at the forefront of the FHE field, and their open-source products SEAL and TFHE provide developers with efficient implementations of FHE.
The application of FHE on the blockchain requires virtual machine support for the relevant instruction set. The fhEVM developed by Zama is a fully homomorphic EVM that supports privacy computing implemented in Solidity, providing the foundation for introducing FHE to the blockchain.
The Fhenix project further explores the integration of fhEVM with Rollup technology, proposing to build an FHE-Rollups type Layer 2 solution. Fhenix also introduces a Relay module, enabling various public chains and Layer 2 networks to access FHE functionality.
FHE technology shows great potential in areas such as full-chain gaming, DeFi, and AI. It can provide encryption protection for games, safeguard sensitive data in DeFi, and protect personal privacy in AI model training.
The current FHE ecosystem is still in its early stages. Besides Zama and Fhenix, there are several other quality projects worth paying attention to, such as Sunscreen, Mind Network, and PADO Labs. The non-profit organizations FHE.org and FHE Onchain provide valuable research and educational resources for the ecosystem.
With the development of projects like Fhenix, we have reason to believe that FHE technology will bring more innovative applications to blockchain and Web3, driving the entire industry forward.
