Eclipse: A Layer 2 innovative solution combining Solana's performance and Ethereum's security.
Eclipse: A Layer2 solution combining Solana's high performance and Ethereum's security.
Introduction
Eclipse is an innovative Ethereum Layer 2 project founded by Neel. The project aims to combine Solana's high performance with Ethereum's security to provide users with a superior blockchain experience.
The Uniqueness of Eclipse
Eclipse, as an Ethereum Layer 2, uses SVM (Solana Virtual Machine) as its execution environment, which allows it to possess both the high performance of Solana and the security of Ethereum. For users, the experience of Eclipse is very similar to that of Solana, featuring short block generation times, low latency, and high throughput.
From a technical perspective, Eclipse, as a Roll Up, ensures the correctness of on-chain execution through a proof mechanism. It uses the Fraud proof of Optimistic Rollup, but unlike traditional methods, Eclipse adopts RISC Zero for ZK fraud proof. In terms of data availability, considering the high transaction fees of Ethereum, Eclipse has chosen Celestia as its data availability layer.
Business Model and Deployment
Eclipse's business model mainly relies on sequencer revenue. With reference to the revenue situation of other Layer 2 projects, this model is expected to bring considerable cash flow to Eclipse.
For project deployment, projects with existing Solana smart contracts can be migrated to Eclipse almost seamlessly. For EVM contracts, they need to be rewritten in Rust. Eclipse also collaborates with Neon to provide conversion services from EVM contracts to SVM contracts, further lowering the deployment barrier.
Interaction with Celestia and RISC Zero
Eclipse chooses to publish transaction batches to Celestia to address the bandwidth limitations of Ethereum. In terms of interaction with RISC Zero, RISC Zero will only be called in the event of fraud or error, to generate zero-knowledge proofs and verify them on Ethereum.
Ecosystem Development
Currently, there are 15 different decentralized applications deployed on the Eclipse platform, covering multiple areas such as consumer products, game incubation, NFT markets, and Launch Pad. Most of these projects come from the Solana ecosystem, demonstrating Eclipse's potential in attracting developers.
Future Outlook
The Eclipse project plans to launch its mainnet for developers in early next year. In the initial phase, the mainnet will be open to developers for a few weeks. After the first batch of applications is deployed, Eclipse will open to the public, marking a new developmental stage for the project.
Eclipse's innovative approach provides new possibilities for the development of blockchain technology. By combining Solana's high performance with Ether's security, Eclipse is expected to occupy an important position in Layer2 solutions, creating more value for users and developers.
